Shortly after arriving in the University of Iowa NICU, he was diagnosed with HIE (Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy) — a type of brain injury caused by lack of oxygen at birth.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOver the past 8 months, Cayden has also been diagnosed with spastic Cerebral Palsy, Infantile Spasms, and doctors expect he will also receive a diagnosis of Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), which affects how the brain processes what the eyes see.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSince his birth, Alex and I have been navigating life as new parents while balancing full-time jobs and Cayden’s many medical needs. Our weeks are filled with frequent trips to Iowa City, in-clinic physical and occupational therapy, and in-home AEA physical therapy and vision therapy. Every day we are learning more about what it means to raise and advocate for a medically complex child.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile we are incredibly grateful for both our private insurance and Medicaid, many therapies that can be extremely beneficial for children with brain injuries, Cerebral Palsy, and CVI are unfortunately not covered by insurance. This leaves us with significant out-of-pocket costs as we pursue the best possible care for Cayden.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWe are so incredibly blessed and grateful for the donations already made to Cayden’s GoFundMe.
