Let's support this fella with all our hearts

Cayden Mikol Mikita was born on July 15, 2025, after a long and traumatic birth. Shortly after arriving in the University of Iowa NICU, he was diagnosed with HIE (Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy) — a type of brain injury caused by lack of oxygen at birth.

Over the past 8 months, Cayden has also been diagnosed with spastic Cerebral Palsy, Infantile Spasms, and doctors expect he will also receive a diagnosis of Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), which affects how the brain processes what the eyes see.

Since his birth, Alex and I have been navigating life as new parents while balancing full-time jobs and Cayden’s many medical needs. Our weeks are filled with frequent trips to Iowa City, in-clinic physical and occupational therapy, and in-home AEA physical therapy and vision therapy. Every day we are learning more about what it means to raise and advocate for a medically complex child.

While we are incredibly grateful for both our private insurance and Medicaid, many therapies that can be extremely beneficial for children with brain injuries, Cerebral Palsy, and CVI are unfortunately not covered by insurance. This leaves us with significant out-of-pocket costs as we pursue the best possible care for Cayden.

We are so incredibly blessed and grateful for the donations already made to Cayden’s GoFundMe. Your generosity reminds us every day how deeply Cayden is loved and how many people are cheering him on.

To continue supporting Cayden’s journey, we’ve created a “Cayden’s Crew” T-shirt fundraiser.

Funds raised from these shirts will go directly toward alternative therapies and treatments that may benefit Cayden, including:

• DMI therapy intensives ($1,500–$8,000)
• Stem cell treatments ($10,000–$15,000)
• Infant massage therapy to help with his high muscle tone and discomfort
• Travel, lodging, and transportation for appointments and specialized treatments

Despite everything he has faced, Cayden continues to defy the odds. With the therapies we are pursuing and the incredible support surrounding him, we know he will continue to grow, fight, and thrive.

We know so many people will proudly wear their shirts and be part of “Cayden’s Crew.”

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your continued support, prayers, donations, kind words, and love.

Here’s to Cayden ♡
